Artist Bio

Obiaje Andrew Ejiga (b. 2003 Nigeria) is a visual artist based in the UK. He received his BA (Hons) in Fine Art, graduating with First Class honours from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, University of Dundee (2025).

His practice explores identity and culture, focusing on how race shapes perception and selfhood. Informed by social theories such as double consciousness, assimilation, intersectionality, and code-switching, his work examines the tension between self-perception and societal expectation. Working primarily in mixed media, he combines oil paint with textiles to create layered figurative portraits that reflect the complexity of identity. His works act as mirrors and windows—revealing lived experience while challenging stereotypes. By centring humanity, his art fosters empathy, urging viewers to look beyond assumptions and engage more deeply with others and themselves.

In 2023, Ejiga developed Seamless, his first cohesive body of work, which explored the duality of identity as an immigrant to the UK through themes of nature versus nurture. This was followed in 2024 by Afro-Baroque, a three-part kinetic painting installation responding to the shifting momentum of code-switching, each piece encased within ornate Afro-Baroque frames. In the same year, he began Double Consciousness, inspired by the writings of W.E.B. Du Bois and the work of Sekai Machache, which continues to inform his ongoing investigation of duality and multiplicity of self.

Ejiga’s work has been exhibited in group shows at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (2023–2025), including the Degree Show (2025), where his mixed-media portraits received critical recognition.
